The Administration's plans to severely cut staffing, close field offices, and slash grant funding at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) pose a grave threat to essential housing support and disaster recovery programs. HUD provides critical assistance to communities across the country, including rental subsidies for low-income families, homelessness prevention initiatives, aid for first-time homebuyers, fair housing enforcement, and funds to help rebuild after natural disasters. Gutting this agency will jeopardize the housing security and wellbeing of millions of vulnerable Americans. The proposed budget cuts also risk causing over 280,000 households to lose access to Section 8 housing vouchers due to shortfalls. This draconian measure would force families out of their homes and potentially into homelessness. As public servants, we have a moral duty to protect our constituents' access to safe, affordable housing and shelter, not rip it away. I urge you to take immediate action to block these destructive plans for HUD. Demand the full restoration of staffing levels, reopening of closed field offices, and reinstatement of all cancelled grant programs. Robbing HUD of its resources undermines its ability to fulfill its vital mission. Furthermore, Congress must reject any budget proposals that cut funding for housing assistance like Section 8 vouchers. Affordable housing is a human right, and dismantling HUD's capacity to provide it is unconscionable. Stand firm against these ruthless attacks on housing security for the sake of our communities.
