The detention of Julian Assange and the continued operation of Guantanamo Bay prison are grave injustices. While Assange exposed horrific war crimes committed by the United States in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo through his work with WikiLeaks, he himself has been persecuted and psychologically tortured for over a decade according to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. His potential extradition to the U.S. where he could face up to 175 years in prison under the Espionage Act poses a chilling threat to press freedom worldwide. Guantanamo, where the abuse and torture of detainees was laid bare by WikiLeaks' disclosures, remains open in defiance of international law against the very principles of justice Assange sought to uphold. The U.S. government must dismiss the charges against Assange, shut down the extrajudicial prison at Guantanamo Bay, and prosecute those responsible for the war crimes he courageously revealed. Failure to do so would be a terrible miscarriage of justice and a stain on America's standing as a nation of laws.
