Oppose S.234 – Performative Legislation Won’t Fix Public Safety

I’m writing to urge you to oppose S.234, the so-called “Prosecutors Need to Prosecute Act.” While framed as a measure to increase accountability, this bill does nothing to address the real issues in our justice system. It is political theater masquerading as policy.
This bill would require prosecutors’ offices to submit annual reports to the Attorney General—a redundant and toothless mandate that lacks clear enforcement mechanisms or meaningful oversight goals. It offers no funding, no structural reforms, and no support for overburdened public safety systems. It’s a press release in the shape of a law.
Moreover, S.234 is steeped in a misleading narrative that local prosecutors aren’t doing their jobs—an insinuation unsupported by data and dangerously rooted in partisan fearmongering. It is a cynical attempt to score political points while ignoring the complex realities of criminal justice, including racial disparities, systemic underfunding, and the urgent need for reform.
Public safety deserves serious solutions, not hollow gestures. I urge you to oppose S.234 and support evidence-based approaches that strengthen community trust, promote accountability, and invest in real justice.
