Vote no on the SAVE America Act (S. 1383). This bill masquerades as election security while creating barriers that will prevent eligible voters from exercising their rights.
Requiring documentary proof of citizenship like passports or birth certificates to register is a 21st-century poll tax. Transgender people and anyone who has changed their name face particular harm when their documents don't match their current identity. Kansas already revoked driver's licenses for more than 1,700 transgender residents after changing ID policies. Now President Trump wants to attach provisions banning gender-affirming care for minors and prohibiting transgender women and girls from sports, making it even harder for transgender people to obtain accurate identification while simultaneously demanding those documents to vote.
This isn't about fraud. It's about predetermining election outcomes by blocking specific communities from the ballot box. More than 30 civil rights organizations, including the Human Rights Campaign, ACLU, and Lambda Legal, oppose this legislation because they recognize it for what it is: an attempt to drive transgender people out of civic participation entirely.
