An open letter to the U.S. Congress

End unethical genetic surveillance of immigrant families and children

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The widespread genetic surveillance being conducted on immigrant children and families by US immigration authorities is highly concerning and a severe overreach of power. Collecting DNA from minors as young as 4 years old and storing it indefinitely in a criminal database is an unjustified invasion of privacy and a violation of civil liberties. This practice reinforces harmful narratives about immigrants and enables discriminatory policing against communities of color. Such genetic monitoring should not be allowed without robust oversight, probable cause requirements, and stringent privacy protections. The unchecked expansion of biometric surveillance raises serious ethical issues and threatens fundamental freedoms. This genetic dragnet must be reined in to uphold constitutional rights and human rights norms. Appropriate limits and safeguards need to be put in place urgently to prevent further abuse of this intrusive technology against vulnerable populations.
