Is there something wrong with the president?
So much is emerging about possible cognitive and physical decline that it’s becoming hard to ignore. And why should we? He just turned 79.
We see him falling asleep in public. More than once. We saw him stumble. More than once. We see him looking lethargic. Drained. Even depressed. Low energy. There’s no verve. No spirit. No swagger. He speaks and writes in an incoherent stream-of-consciousness vitriol.
He looks and sounds like an old man wanting to be left alone with his TV.
And this morning I read this…
“White House insiders say Trump’s first major trip abroad to meet with World Leaders includes a deliberate effort to limit public exposure and manage any visible signs of frailty. One contingency plan is to “create chaos” as a reason to leave the G7 meetings early.
The G7 Summit in Alberta will be Trump’s most high-profile international appearance this year. Already, speculation abounds that his team is preparing contingency plans for a sudden exit should his condition deteriorate or be exposed publicly.”
This was written before Trump indeed left the G7 early, ostensibly to monitor the Israel/Iran conflict.
But perhaps it was his opening with a defense of Russia, with even more garbled history than usual, or dropping papers that the Canadian PM had to retrieve, or stating that the US has reached a trade agreement with the EU (?) that prompted the sudden desire to get back to a safe space.
It’s apparent America has left the role of world stabilizer to become a chaos agent. We have the power to facilitate, but also a great power to disrupt. The latter so far seems to be the Trump administration’s go-to strategy for everything.
The world is on fire. And our president offers limp words, or strong words with limp responses. He creates more confusion in negotiations intended to ease tensions. Has there been any progress towards peace on any front that we are negotiating?
Chaos and confusion trickles down. And that’s what we’re watching. We’re watching our president creating chaos. Then walking away with a shrug.
He makes decisions. Then the decisions are reversed. With no good explanation or logical reasoning.
He makes outlandish pronouncements that the GOP and most media spin into a kind of savant brilliance.
He lies. He rages. He rants. And he won’t call the governor of a state where elected officials were gunned down in cold blood by one of his crazy supporters because…
“Why would I call him? I could call and say, ‘Hi, how you doing?’ The guy doesn’t have a clue," Trump said, referring to Tim Walz. “He’s a mess. So I could be nice and call, but why waste time?"
This is not brilliance. This is not presidential leadership. This is not even human.
Trump actually seems unwell. And not up to the task at hand of calming his country. Or the world.
Should we trust his judgement? Do you?
