Like you, clearly, I am deeply shocked and disgusted by what happened this morning in Secretary Noem’s press conference.
I wanted to write this message as one of unambiguous support and allyship. Though a representative/constituent relationship should bear a healthy degree of skepticism and transactionality, in this case what is being challenged is your very right to represent me and my right to that representation.
Therefore, I believe that there is no option other than the immediate initiation of impeachment hearings against Secretary Noem, her impeachment, and her removal by the Senate. Frankly, many others in the administration deserve it as well, but Noem today has crossed into the territory of it being malpractice if she continues to “serve”.
Privately, I imagine many of your Republican colleagues will agree with me, and I know chamber control is theirs. But this is a threat to their power, too. And today is a question of how far down the authoritarian rabbit hole they’ve gone so as to not care about their OWN power. Surely Mitch McConnell can appreciate the value of the senate’s power to check.
So I beseech you, do whatever it takes, behind the scenes and in front. Find the ones with spines, or failing that, hearts, or failing that, a sense of self-preservation beyond the next four years. Make them draw the line, if not for their colleagues, then for themselves.
Do this, for my best interest, for yours, and for theirs.
