Support the DISCLOSE Act

Since the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, millions of dollars in dark money have flooded our elections. Billionaires and powerful special interests spend unlimited money to influence election outcomes with little to no transparency. The DISCLOSE (Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections) Act would shine a light on this secret spending and let voters know who is trying to buy their vote. The DISCLOSE Act would significantly improve transparency and accountability in elections by regulating dark money groups and requiring additional disclosures of top donors. These disclosures would allow voters more information on who is paying for campaign advertisements, and, ultimately, the identities of those trying to influence the outcomes of elections. The DISCLOSE Act would also work to close the loopholes that allow special interests to obscure themselves with shell organizations and counterfeit “social welfare” groups and would demand political ads to clearly identify who funds them. These protections would strengthen visibility and educate voters as to who is sponsoring political messages. The DISCLOSE Act would target social media and influencers and address the role they play in elections, requiring influencers to disclose payments received for promoting or opposing a political candidate. This notice ensures voters know which endorsements an influencer was paid to make. The DISCLOSE Act would work to expand and reinforce prohibitions on foreign spending to prevent foreign interference in U.S. elections. As a result of the Citizens United Decision, foreign money remains a threat and leaves our electoral process vulnerable to tampering. Tell congress to support and pass the DISCLOSE Act. It is time to end dark money in politics and build transparency around who funds our elections.
