Protect free speech, limit prosecutorial overreach on campus protests

2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The Justice Department's potential pursuit of terrorism charges against pro-Palestinian protesters at Columbia University raises significant free speech concerns. Criminalizing political expression and dissent sets a dangerous precedent that could chill free speech on campuses nationwide. While the department claims Hamas connections, protesting is a fundamental right in a democracy. This heavy-handed approach seems disproportionate and an overreach if the accusations lack substantive evidence of genuine terrorism or violence. Bringing such serious charges risks infringing on constitutionally protected rights and academic freedom. A measured, impartial review focusing on proven illegal conduct rather than suppressing speech is warranted.
