Without them, those prices would have actually dropped by nearly 1%. This isn't abstract economic theory. The New York Fed's own researchers found that for every percentage point increase in the average tariff, consumer prices rose by roughly a quarter percent — and those elevated prices are expected to persist into 2027. Two-thirds of that increase came directly from the tariffs themselves. The White House claims foreign exporters absorb the cost. They don't. American consumers do.
