An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Protect Workers: Uphold Heat-Related Safeguard Rule at OSHA

21 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to make sure OSHA follows through on rules protecting workers from the dangers of extreme heat. With OSHA itself under attack by the current Administration, it’s become even more important that Congress make sure the rules proposed under the Biden Administration become actionable. Heat-related illnesses pose a significant threat to the well-being and safety of millions of indoor and outdoor workers across various industries. It is imperative that comprehensive measures are implemented to safeguard these individuals from the adverse effects of excessive heat exposure. The alarming statistics highlighting the severity of heat-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities underscore the urgency of this matter. Every year, numerous workers succumb to the devastating consequences of heat exposure, and countless others suffer preventable illnesses. The proposed rule had aimed to address this pressing concern by requiring employers to establish injury and illness prevention plans specifically designed to mitigate heat hazards in the workplace. These plans would include essential elements such as evaluating heat risks, providing access to drinking water and rest breaks, controlling indoor heat levels, and implementing acclimatization protocols for new or returning workers. Additionally, the rule mandates training programs to educate workers on heat-related risks and appropriate response protocols in case of emergencies. While heat exposure affects workers across various sectors, it is crucial to acknowledge the disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations, including workers of color and those employed in labor-intensive industries. It is imperative that proactive measures are taken to address this issue and ensure that no worker is forced to endure hazardous conditions that jeopardize their health and safety. I urge you to hold hearings and demand answers from the current OSHA administrators what is being done to implement these rules. We must create safer working environments, prevent needless suffering, and uphold the fundamental right of every worker to a dignified and secure workplace. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
