An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
Insist Speaker Johnson convene the house to seat Adelita Grijalva.

On October 8, 2025, Attorney General Pam Bondi said that Americans deemed to be members of “Antifa” would be dealt with using the “same approach” as Venezuelan boats allegedly smuggling drugs into America. The occupants of those boats were killed by the US military without charges or trial, and without regard to the fact that the US law does not provide the death penalty for drug smuggling.
Objectively, the threats are depraved, anti-democratic, and possibly criminal. The calls by the president and the Attorney General to jail and/or kill public officials and citizens perceived to be political opponents are unprecedented, not only in the history of the United States but in the modern history of nearly every Western democracy.
Standing alone, those threats justify the invocation of the 25th Amendment on the grounds that the president is mentally incapable of performing the duties of the presidency. And if he is mentally capable of doing so, he should be impeached, convicted, and removed from office.
Rep. Raúl Grijalva served in the U.S. House of Representatives for over 22 years. Sadly, the Arizona Democrat died in March after a year-long battle with lung cancer. On September 23, his daughter, Adelita Grijalva, won the special election to fill his seat for the remainder of the current term.
That was over two weeks ago. But Adelita Grijalva has still not been sworn in — meaning she is unable to represent the more than 800,000 people of her district in Arizona, who voted for her by a blowout margin of 69% to 29% over the Republican contender.
By the way, if you’ve heard claims that Grijalva has not been sworn in yet because the House is not in session, remember that when two Republicans won special elections on April 1, Johnson somehow managed to get them sworn in *the very next day* even though the House was not in session at that time, either.
In essence, the people of Adelita Grijalva’s district in Arizona are being deprived of their right to congressional representation.
I’ve already contacted House Speaker Mike Johnson, and now I’m asking you, my representative, to contact him also. You claim to be working during the shutdown, so please do your job. You could say:
The people of Arizona’s 7th congressional district deserve representation in Congress, and they chose Adelita Grijalva — by overwhelming numbers — to be their representative. Seat Adelita Grijalva immediately.
