An open letter to the U.S. Congress

No national guard without state authorization

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The president's deployment of the National Guard to police protests without authorization from state governors is a concerning overreach of federal power. Governors have the authority to decide if and when the National Guard should be called in to assist with law enforcement within their states. Trump's open-ended order permitting federal intervention in protests across the country against the will of state leadership undermines principles of states' rights and civilian control of the military. This unilateral militarization of the response to largely peaceful demonstrations sets a dangerous precedent that erodes freedoms of speech and assembly protected by the First Amendment. We must pushback against the excessive federalization of law enforcement and defend the constitutional balance of power between federal and state governments. I urge you to vocally oppose Trump's order and support legal challenges to restore governors' authority over National Guard deployments within their jurisdictions.
