Dear Mayor Gallego,
I am writing to express my deep concern about the alarming state of street safety in Phoenix. The 2021 statistics paint a grim picture: 40,833 car accidents, 278 fatal accidents resulting in 294 deaths, and 10,879 injury accidents causing 16,062 injuries. These numbers represent real people—our friends, family, and neighbors—whose lives have been forever altered. The current state of street safety is unacceptable and demands urgent action.
Improving street safety not only protects our citizens but also has significant economic benefits. Safer streets and fewer accidents reduce public service costs, such as emergency response and medical care. Additionally, fewer accidents can lower car insurance premiums for all residents, as insurance companies adjust rates based on overall risk. By investing in street safety, we can create a safer, more affordable environment for everyone in Phoenix.
I am calling on your leadership to prioritize and implement comprehensive measures to improve street safety in Phoenix. Some initiatives that could significantly reduce accidents and enhance safety include:
1. Effective Traffic Enforcement: While there are enough officers on the street, they are not adequately enforcing existing laws and failing to deter illegal activity. Enhanced accountability and a renewed focus on traffic law enforcement are necessary to ensure compliance.
2. Traffic Enforcement Cameras: Implementing traffic enforcement cameras proven successful in reducing speeding and running red lights. These cameras can serve as a powerful deterrent to reckless driving.
3. Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety: Developing and maintaining safe, accessible pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, including protected bike lanes and well-lit crosswalks.
4. Public Awareness Campaigns: Launching educational campaigns to raise awareness about road safety, encouraging responsible driving, and informing residents about the consequences of traffic violations.
5. Data-Driven Approaches: Utilizing data analytics to identify high-risk areas and times for traffic accidents, tailoring interventions to maximize effectiveness.
Mayor Gallego, the residents of Phoenix deserve to feel safe on our streets. By taking decisive action to address this critical issue, you can help reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities in our city. I urge you to make street safety a top priority and implement the necessary measures to protect our community.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to seeing positive changes in our city’s approach to street safety.
Sincerely,
Aden Parsons
