"Give me your tired, your poor, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, / The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. / Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, / I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”. - The New Colossus, Emma Lazarus, 1883
Emma Lazarus wrote these words which adorn the American made pedestal created to support the Statue of Liberty- a gift from France. This pedestal- and the words engraved within its walls- was financed by the American people. It changed the meaning of the original gift- an homage to the republic- to that of a beacon of hope and acceptance to immigrants, exiles, and refugees the world over. Though the sentiment is still debated today, the intent is implied based on Lazarus’s renowned advocacy for Russian Jewish immigrants.
When Trump speaks on immigration, he speaks on a future of white Christian nationalism. When we consider the Statue of Liberty, however, we are reminding ourselves of the foundations upon which the United States of America was founded.
This current chapter of the American story should not be a character arc. We must fight for the principles upon which we were founded. Stand up to Trump today. Impeach. Start over. Remember the tenets of the Great American Experience and act upon them!
