An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Dehumanizing Talk & Lies About Easily-Accessible Data

10 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

On December 2, 2025, President Trump held a cabinet meeting. Below is the transcript of about the last two minutes. I want you to read it in full and reconcile in your heart how you can support the most powerful man in the world speaking this way about human beings who bear the image of God. “Somalians ripped off [Minnesota] for billions of dollars, billions. Every year, billions of dollars and they contribute nothing. The welfare is like 88 percent. They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country, I'll be honest with you, OK? Somebody would say, oh, that's not politically correct. I don't care. I don't want them in our country. Their country is no good for a reason. Their country stinks and we don't want them in our country. I can say that about other countries too. I can say it about other countries too. We don't want them — the hell — we have to rebuild our country. You know, our country is at a tipping point. We could go bad; we're at a tipping point. I don't know if people mind me saying that, but I'm saying it. We could go one way or the other and we're going to go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country. [Representative] Ilhan Omar [D-MN-5] is garbage, she's garbage. Her friends are garbage. These aren't people that work. These aren't people that say let's go, come on, let's make this place great. These are people that do nothing but complain. They complain, and from where they came from, they've got nothing. You know, if they came from Paradise and they said this isn't Paradise. But when they come from hell and they complain and do nothing but bitch we don't want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it” (Transcript obtained from https://rollcall.com/factbase/trump/transcript/donald-trump-remarks-cabinet-meeting-december-2-2025/, 2:15:50 through the end, last accessed 12/05/2025). The Christian faith you profess to hold is enough to tell you that you cannot support this. The easily-available information that shows he flat-out lied about this vulnerable people group is in The Minnesota State Demographic Center’s 2023 (the most recent) report: “The Economic Status of Minnesotans” (https://mn.gov/admin/assets/Economic%20Status%20of%20Minnesotans%202023_tcm36-569572.pdf). Somali people make up about 1.4% of Minnesota’s population, numbering around 76K people (pg. 8), 57% of which are foreign-born (pg. 14). The majority of Somalis in Minnesota — 75% of people from ages 16 to 64 — participate in the labor force (pg. 30). The 25% not in the labor force include, though are not limited to, those who are full-time students, caregivers of young children of elderly family members, or disabled (pg. 30). As a member of Congress, you are obligated to speak up both for the humane treatment of people and for truth; this obligation compels you to speak to it against this racist tirade.
