An open letter to the U.S. Senate

Reject harmful anti-trans sports bills H.R. 28, S. 9

The "Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act" would reinforce discrimination and abuse against women and girls, particularly those who are transgender, nonbinary, or intersex. This dangerous legislation threatens to subject student athletes to invasive testing and harassment based on sexist stereotypes about how women and girls should look or perform athletically. It wrongly equates womanhood with narrow biological criteria that excludes intersex individuals. Additionally, this bill opens the door to policing any female athlete perceived as "too masculine," mirroring the abusive scrutiny endured by prominent athletes of color like Caster Semenya and Serena Williams. Gender equity in sports has advanced by rejecting stereotypical notions of femininity, which this misguided legislation disregards. I urge you to oppose H.R. 28 and S. 9 to prevent the humiliation, discrimination, and violation of privacy that these proposals would inflict on women and girl athletes of all backgrounds.
