If you were among the 22 governors who signed the June 8 joint statement condemning President Trump’s unauthorized deployment of the California National Guard, I want to thank you. Federalizing a state’s Guard without the governor’s consent is an extreme and dangerous move. Doing so to suppress protests only escalates tensions and undermines the constitution. Your public opposition made clear that states still have a role in defending democracy and due process. We appreciate your humane and constitutional stance.
