This is truly how democracy dies. When everything is bad, nothing is bad. People get desensitized. They can no longer keep track of it all. It’s all so awful that none of it gets processed anymore. So here we are. Donald Trump wants to take $1.8B of money that taxpayers like you and me have paid to the government, and he wants to give it to his most hardcore followers. The people who stormed the Capitol on January 6. Trump calls them victims of Joe Biden’s weaponization of the Justice Department. This is corruption. Corruption in plain sight. Trump is going to give his supporters taxpayers’ money. And Trump does this stuff with a straight face as though his claims of weaponization are legitimate. But the people he wants to give our money to were convicted by or pled guilty in front of judges. The Biden Justice Department didn’t decide that they were guilty, the criminal justice system did. And now, Trump is going to reward them for it. Not with his money but with ours. Do we the people want to give our money to convicted insurrectionists and call it justice? And do we want our elected officials to give him permission to do so? Should they be allowed to keep their jobs if they do? This makes a complete mockery of government by and for the people. Never in the history of the United States has a sitting President sought a monetary settlement from the government he leads — let alone sought many billions of dollars in taxpayer funds. No president should be able to use the DOJ as a personal rewards program for the people who helped him attack our democracy. But make no mistake, that is exactly what is happening. Congress has the power of the purse. They could take a stand here, prohibiting the White House from making these expenditures. But this is, of course, Trump’s Congress. So corrective action seems unlikely. Even as the DOJ announced that “the United States,” (i.e., the president and not Congress), would send $1.7776B to “an account for the sole use by the Anti-Weaponization Fund.” Wake TF up. Do not let this happen. This is not your money. This is not Trump’s money. It is the people’s money. Do your jobs. While you still have them.
