Major Watson Chose Courage Over Silence. Congress Must Do the Same.

Dear Members of Congress, In a moment when so many with power have chosen comfort over conscience, Air Force Major Jason Watson chose courage. He looked directly at the consequences — the loss of his career, his retirement, his freedom — and spoke anyway, because he believed the American people deserved to know the truth. That courage should be honored, not imprisoned. On Monday, August 17, Major Watson told CNN’s Erin Burnett that President Trump is “violating the Constitution, breaking the law, engaged in rampant corruption and is killing Americans.” One day later, he was ordered into pretrial confinement. Major Watson first came to public attention on July 1, when he stood in uniform on the steps of the United States Capitol calling for the impeachment and removal of President Trump and Vice President Vance. He cited specific constitutional violations — the War Powers Act, the Appointments Clause, the 5th and 8th Amendments — arising from the administration’s military strikes on Iran and Venezuela. He was arrested. He knew the consequences. He spoke anyway. His attorney believes his CNN interview triggered Tuesday’s detention. The Air Force has cited “allegations of continued misconduct” without identifying what that misconduct is. We understand that the Uniform Code of Military Justice places restrictions on political speech by active duty service members. We are not asking Congress to ignore those rules. But we are asking Congress to reckon with something larger than those rules. When a government detains a decorated officer the day after he speaks truth on national television, it sends a message to every service member, every civil servant, and every citizen watching: silence is the price of your career, your pension, and your freedom. That silence — enforced, weaponized, institutionalized — is not a safeguard. It is how democracies die. We demand an immediate congressional inquiry into the timing and basis of Major Watson’s detention, full transparency from the Air Force about the allegations being used to justify pretrial confinement, and protection for military whistleblowers who report constitutional violations. Silence in the face of what is happening will be to the detriment of us all. Major Watson refused that silence. Congress must not choose it either. He served this country. Speak up for him.
