An open letter to State Governors (Va. only)

HANDS OFF GMU - Stop the Partisan Attacks on VA’s Largest Public University

5 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

I write to you today deeply alarmed, not because of anything President Gregory Washington has done, but because of what has been done to him, to George Mason University, and to the principles of academic freedom and institutional independence. George Mason University is under political attack. In recent weeks, the university has been subjected to four separate investigations—two from the Department of Education and two from the Department of Justice—all reportedly triggered by politically motivated complaints. These investigations appear to target President Washington’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. This is about dismantling the values that make GMU strong. Mason is a cornerstone of Northern Virginia’s economy and civic life. It is the largest public university in the Commonwealth and a nationally respected research institution. GMU produces the workforce that powers our region’s innovation economy, educates thousands of first-generation students, and reflects the full diversity of the Commonwealth. Undermining the university’s leadership at a time of growth and momentum risks destabilizing an institution that is critical to Virginia’s future competitiveness. Removing President Washington, who enjoys wide support from students, faculty, alumni, and the broader community, would set back GMU and send a chilling message across higher education in the state. It is especially concerning that the Board of Visitors has hired Torridon Law, the firm founded by former Attorney General Bill Barr, to represent the university during these investigations. This decision raises serious questions about whether the university is being positioned not for defense, but for political realignment. This is a moment to lead with principle. You have the power to stop this. I urge you to publicly support President Washington, reject these politically motivated investigations, and recommit to the institutional independence of Virginia’s public universities. We are watching, and we will not be silent while political forces seek to dismantle the mission and leadership of Virginia’s largest public university.
