Investigate DOGE’s Handling of Social Security Data
I am writing to urge you to investigate the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and its access to Social Security Administration (SSA) records.
Recent reporting shows that in June 2025 DOGE uploaded a large SSA dataset to a high risk cloud environment, potentially exposing the personal information of millions of Americans. Even if no breach has been confirmed, transferring such a sensitive trove to a vulnerable system has already endangered the trust that citizens place in government institutions.
Demand Clear Explanations
Congress should require full explanations from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) about what data was transferred, why it was moved, and what safeguards are in place now.
The Supreme Court’s June 2025 decision allowing DOGE to access SSA data while litigation continues, combined with the exemption from Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) oversight, makes robust congressional action unavoidable.
Call For Immediate Audits
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) should conduct immediate audits not only of DOGE’s cloud practices but also of its contracting relationships, security procedures, and any political directives guiding its operations.
Transparency is essential whenever national identity records are involved, because secrecy invites abuse.
Enact Stronger Legal Protections
Congress must enact legislation that locks down SSA data and deters misuse. FOIA accountability must be restored, encryption and strict access controls mandated, and severe civil and criminal penalties imposed for unauthorized access, sharing, or political exploitation of Social Security records.
Ensure Accountability For Contractors
These protections should extend to contractors and subcontractors, ensuring no private actor can skirt responsibility. The Privacy Act of 1974 and the Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) should be updated so that violations trigger swift enforcement, mandatory reporting to Congress, and real consequences for both officials and vendors.
Law must make clear that Americans’ Social Security data is a protected national asset, not a resource to be treated casually or politically.
Speak Out And Notify The Public
Your voice matters. Please speak out publicly against misuse of Social Security data, demand hearings in oversight committees, and require timely notification to every American whose records may have been compromised.
Rebuild Public Trust
Congressional leaders must ensure that Americans know when their privacy is at risk and what steps are being taken to protect them. Only by pairing transparency with accountability can the government rebuild trust in its stewardship of Social Security information.
I urge you to act swiftly, visibly, and decisively so that this issue does not fade quietly while Americans’ data remains exposed.
