Prioritize equitable canyon access and sustainable transportation solutions

The proposed Little Cottonwood Canyon gondola has raised concerns about its accessibility and affordability for non-skiers like hikers. As a taxpayer, I am apprehensive about investing substantial public funds into a project that primarily benefits private ski resorts while failing to address the needs of broader canyon users. The gondola's operating hours and pricing may not cater to early-morning hiking enthusiasts seeking affordable access to trailheads. Instead of a gondola, I propose implementing a predominantly mandatory shuttle system throughout the year in Little Cottonwood Canyon. This would alleviate traffic congestion and promote equitable canyon access. Personal vehicles could still enter, but only with a reserved parking spot and adequate safety equipment. This solution would benefit all canyon recreationists, not just skiers, while mitigating environmental impacts and ensuring public funds are utilized judiciously. Moreover, I believe that ski area operators should contribute a significant portion of the funding for any transportation infrastructure disproportionately benefiting their businesses. It is essential that the burden of costs does not fall solely on taxpayers, especially for a project with limited public utility. I urge you to prioritize inclusive, cost-effective solutions that serve the diverse interests of all canyon stakeholders.
