We need a state-level Voting Rights Act

Since the federal Voting Rights Act (VRA) was weakened in 2013, at least 31 states have passed 103 restrictive voting laws. Now that Louisiana v. Callais has rendered Section 2 of the VRA effectively useless by declaring race-conscious redistricting unconstitutional, we can expect even more dramatic discriminatory redistricting against communities of color. Enacting a state-level Voting Rights Act would allow Delaware to push back against attacks on voting rights and longstanding injustices, as well as replace lost or weakened protections for Delaware voters. Other states have already passed a state-level VRA, including California (2002), Washington (2018), Oregon (2019), Virginia (2021), New York (2022), Connecticut (2023), Minnesota (2024), and Colorado (2025). By passing a Delaware Voting Rights Act, our state would not only help ensure Delaware voters are protected, but also lead the way for other states across the country to enact their own protections.
