America’s immigration system is broken, and Congress can take a significant step forward to fix it.
As healthcare professionals, we believe that every person deserves access to not only healthcare but health itself. Many of us serve underserved and marginalized patients, many of whom are immigrants, and many of them, or their family members, are Undocumented. We bear witness daily to the deep and negative health impacts that our unjust and often cruel immigration laws inflict on these communities. Fear of deportation, families being torn apart, ongoing significant workers rights abuses, and the personal risks taken to just help their families survive, all of this had profound effects on the physical and mental health of Immigrants, their families, their children.
I am writing to ask you to pass and advocate for a simple, common sense immigration reform to update the immigration registry date. Supporting H.R. 1511/SB 2606 will make a simple update to existing Section 249 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, allowing long-time residents in our communities to apply for Lawful Permanent Residency. This update will recognize that immigrants are an essential part of our community and the fabric of our society. It will honor the millions of undocumented people in our country who have had to wait far too long for immigration relief and reform. It will provide a significant step forward to reform our broken immigration system.
I am urging you to support this common-sense, simple update to immigration code because it will have a life-changing effect for our families, friends, and community. This update will keep families together, benefit our economy, honor the contributions of immigrants, and make us stronger and more unified as a country. Will you support H.R. 1511/ SB 2606, and as our Senators/Representatives actively advocate for these bills? The health of your communities depends on it.
