As a dedicated healthcare provider and constituent, I am writing to urge you to vote against the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (H.R. 1) currently under consideration in the Senate.
This legislation poses a grave threat to the health and well-being of millions of Americans, particularly the working poor, seniors, and rural communities. The proposed $490 billion in Medicare cuts and $715 billion in Medicaid reductions over the next decade will devastate the healthcare infrastructure that so many rely on 1 (https://retiredamericans.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/One-Big-Beautiful-Bill-Act-Fact-Sheet.pdf). As someone who works in small hospitals, I can tell you firsthand that these cuts will force many of these facilities—especially in underserved areas—to close their doors, leaving entire communities without access to essential care.
Moreover, the bill’s $290 billion cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will strip food assistance from millions, including 6.5 million seniors 1 (https://retiredamericans.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/One-Big-Beautiful-Bill-Act-Fact-Sheet.pdf). These are not just numbers—they are real people, many of whom I see every day in my practice, struggling to make ends meet.
All of this is being done to fund massive tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. This is not fiscal responsibility—it is a redistribution of resources from those who need them most to those who need them least. It is, quite frankly, a moral failure.
I implore you to stand up for your constituents, for working families, and for the integrity of our healthcare system. Please vote no on the One Big Beautiful Bill, if you have an ounce of conscience left in your bodies. Or at the very least, when people are losing their healthcare and their ability to eat, stand in my ED and tell them why you voted for it.
