Demand Congressional Action to Stop Threats Against NATO Allies

President Trump's threats to acquire Greenland through force and his imposition of tariffs on eight NATO allies represent a dangerous escalation that demands immediate Congressional intervention. On Saturday, Trump announced 10% tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, set to take effect February 1, 2026, and increase to 25% on June 1. These tariffs target our closest allies simply because they participated in Operation Arctic Endurance, a routine Danish-led military exercise in Greenland.
In a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store on Sunday, Trump stated he no longer feels obligated to think purely of peace and declared that the world is not secure unless the United States has complete and total control of Greenland. This rhetoric undermines decades of transatlantic cooperation and threatens the stability of NATO at a time when alliance unity is critical.
Greenland is a self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. The United States already has military access through a 1951 defense agreement, and Danish officials have expressed willingness to expand American and NATO presence there. Last year, Copenhagen announced a $6.5 billion Arctic defense package specifically to address U.S. concerns about Greenland's protection. These are our allies responding constructively to legitimate security interests.
Congress has constitutional authority over foreign commerce and war powers. I urge you to publicly condemn these threats against our NATO allies and take legislative action to prevent the implementation of these punitive tariffs. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer correctly stated that using tariffs against allies is completely wrong and not the right way to resolve differences within an alliance.
European Union leaders are convening an extraordinary summit this week to address this crisis, with France requesting activation of the EU's anti-coercion instrument that could impose severe restrictions on U.S. goods and services. We cannot allow reckless threats to destroy relationships that have kept America secure for 75 years. I need you to act now to stop this dangerous escalation before irreparable damage is done to our alliances and our economy.
