An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress

Vote NO on the “Big, Beautiful Bill” before it kills us all!

38 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

I'm writing to urge you to reject the House-passed budget reconciliation package and similar proposals, which would devastate essential programs like Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and SNAP. These cuts will harm the very people these programs are meant to protect: seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families with children. Cuts to Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and SNAP will harm tens of millions of people, including your constituents. People who need health care and nutrition will be subject to multiple red tape requirements that will lead to eligible people losing assistance they need. This will threaten people’s health, increase hunger, and make it harder for them to work. This dangerous bill will raise costs for all of us. It will also shift costs to states, inevitably resulting in benefits reduced or denied as states struggle to replace lost federal funding. I am deeply concerned about cuts to Medicaid and the ACA. The proposal includes eliminating Medicaid’s payment of Medicare Part B premiums. This cruel move would increase out-of-pocket costs for over 10 million low-income seniors and people with disabilities. In total, roughly 15 million people will be left without health insurance. I urge you to oppose these cuts to SNAP, which are the largest in history. Not only does the House force states to cover a portion of SNAP benefits for the first time, undoing a longstanding bipartisan commitment that families should get help putting food on the table no matter which state they call home, but it also expands SNAP’s harsh time limits based on red-tape paperwork requirements. This will take food assistance away from roughly 3.2 million adults each month, including 1 million older adults and 800,000 parents of children as young as 7. And the House bill undermines a bipartisan consensus dating from 1996 that qualified immigrants such as trafficking and domestic violence victims, refugees, and asylum seekers should be able to access basic needs programs including SNAP. This isn't fiscal responsibility, it’s balancing the budget on the backs of those who can least afford it. I urge you to reject these and all harmful basic needs cuts that are simply meant to pay for more tax breaks for the wealthy and attacks on our immigrant neighbors. Thank you.
