An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Condemn Trump’s EO removing financial protections for women and minorities

8 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

I am writing because I have grave concerns about the Executive Order titled “Restoring Equality and Meritocracy.” Despite the name of this order, it could allow for discriminatory practices against women and minorities with regard to applying for credit. It could also slow down or halt any pending litigation under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and rollback the ECOA protections. The ECOA was designed to prevent lenders from requiring women have men cosign loans or credit cards; by stripping these protections, this EO has the ability to remove financial independence from women and minorities and practices like redlining could return to communities. Additionally this EO would make it harder for women to litigate when they have experienced discriminatory practices and could allow federally funded projects to discriminate against them. It further attempts to rollback provisions in Tiles VII and VIII of the Civil Right’s Act. Congress must uphold and strengthen the ECOA and Civil Right’s Act and should condemn the presidential abuse of power and attempts to legalize discrimination.
