Prohibitions on ALPR Cameras

Some of your colleagues in the House have introduced an amendment in a transportation budget bill that would prohibit the use of automatic license plate readers for any purposes other than tolling for recipients of federal transportation funds. This is great news to hear, and I would like to ask that you support your House colleagues in making sure this amendment makes it in the final bill. ALPR cameras are a major privacy concern for American citizens, building broad databases of where Americans travel on a day to day basis. There have had several documented instances of abuses of these systems by law enforcement and these systems have also led to false accusations of crimes. Such a broad database of information collected without warrants and abuses of these systems are violations of our Fourth Amendment rights. Adding this amendment in as a stipulation of federal highway funding would be a great step in protecting every American's right to privacy, and I ask that you support this measure.
