Supreme Court: DOJ Is Not a Weapon—Restore Its Integrity

I write to you with grave concern about the erosion of the Department of Justice’s independence under the current administration. The Department is not meant to serve the whims of any president, but to uphold the rule of law impartially. Today, that principle is in jeopardy.
Since 2025, President Trump has filled senior DOJ roles with political allies—figures like Pam Bondi and Jeanine Pirro—whose public records show loyalty to the President over legal independence. Meanwhile, DOJ resources are being directed toward retaliatory investigations of journalists, former prosecutors, and political critics, undermining long-held norms of justice and due process (Politico, May 2025). These actions are incompatible with a constitutional democracy that depends on the evenhanded application of the law.
The integrity of the judiciary is tied to the health of the Justice Department. When prosecutions are driven by political motive instead of legal merit, the legitimacy of our entire legal system begins to erode. Justice, as the Constitution envisions it, must not be distorted into a tool of power. I urge the Court to be vigilant in cases that test these boundaries and to speak clearly when the rule of law is under threat.
