An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Protect LGBTQ+ online access and speech rights

The proposed SCREEN Act (HB6429) raises significant concerns regarding free speech and access to information online, particularly for LGBTQ+ communities. Requiring commercial entities to verify users' ages and prohibit minors from accessing content deemed "harmful" could result in widespread censorship of educational resources, artistic expression, and discussions around sexuality and gender identity. While the goal of protecting minors is well-intentioned, the broad definition of "harmful" content and the requirement for age verification could disproportionately impact marginalized communities that already face barriers in accessing information and support networks. Many LGBTQ+ youth rely on online platforms to find affirming content, connect with others, and explore their identities in a safe space. Furthermore, the age verification process itself raises privacy concerns, as it requires the collection and storage of sensitive personal data, despite the stated prohibition. There is a risk that this information could be mishandled or exploited, compromising users' privacy and safety.
