Undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in taxes in 2022, and roughly half of undocumented households file returns. The IRS's own estimates show a 1% drop in voluntary compliance costs $46 billion in federal revenue. We are watching that compliance collapse in real time because people are too afraid to file. The child tax credit change makes this worse. Up to 2.7 million children who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents are losing access to the credit because their parents lack legal status.
