I’m writing to urge you to uphold and defend the Endangered Species Act (ESA), one of our most effective and broadly supported environmental laws.
A recent peer-reviewed study published in Conservation Letters (Vucetich et al., 2025) found that more than 75% of Americans—across political affiliations, regions, and demographics—support the ESA. This strong, bipartisan backing remained consistent regardless of how the law was described or which types of species were mentioned. The study also revealed that most Americans believe the ESA should be more protective than it currently is, and that endangered species should be protected as long as necessary.
Simply put: Americans support saving species.
Yet, despite this overwhelming public support, the ESA continues to face legislative and administrative threats that would weaken habitat protections, reduce science-based decision-making, and jeopardize recovery efforts for imperiled species.
At a time of accelerating biodiversity loss and increasing climate disruption, we need to strengthen—not undermine—our conservation commitments. The ESA is a critical tool for protecting ecosystems, safeguarding endangered species, and preserving our natural heritage. Biodiversity is essential for maintaining our food systems, preventing the spread of diseases, and supporting local and national economies.
I urge you to:
1. Oppose any legislative or administrative efforts that would weaken the ESA’s authority or scope.
2. Maintain strong, science-based standards for listing, delisting, and habitat protection.
3. Fully fund the federal agencies responsible for enforcing and implementing the ESA.
The American people want bold, lasting action to protect the wildlife and wild places we all cherish. Please stand with the public and protect biodiversity by defending the Endangered Species Act.
