An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Demand Accountability for President's Vulgar Conduct at Michigan Ford Plant

6 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

I am writing to demand that you take immediate action to hold President Trump accountable for his conduct during his visit to the Dearborn Truck Plant on Tuesday. Video footage shows the President flipping off autoworker TJ Sabula and appearing to mouth or say "fuck you" twice while pointing at him. This behavior is beneath the dignity of the office and represents a dangerous escalation in how our elected leaders treat working Americans. TJ Sabula, a 40-year-old line worker, shouted at the President regarding his handling of matters related to Jeffrey Epstein. Regardless of what was said, no President should respond to a constituent with obscene gestures and profanity. The White House's defense that Sabula was "a lunatic" screaming expletives does not justify the President's response. Leaders are expected to maintain composure, not engage in vulgar exchanges with citizens exercising their First Amendment rights. Sabula has now been suspended from his job pending an investigation, and he believes he is being targeted for political retribution for embarrassing Trump. The United Auto Workers union stated that "workers should never be subjected to vulgar language or behavior by anyone—including the President of the United States." Even Ford's Executive Director of Corporate Communications emphasized that respect is a core company value and they don't condone inappropriate behavior in their facilities. This incident demands a congressional response. I urge you to publicly condemn the President's conduct and support any investigations into whether Sabula faced retaliation for exercising his constitutional rights. Congress has oversight authority and must use it to establish that no President is above basic standards of decency and respect for American workers. Your constituents are watching to see whether you will defend working people or remain silent while they are demeaned by the highest office in the land.
