Oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

congress I’m writing as a concerned Iowa voter to strongly oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. While it claims to protect elections, in reality, it would make voting more difficult for thousands of eligible Iowans—especially seniors, students, rural residents, married women, and people of color. The SAVE Act would: • Require documentary proof of citizenship such as a passport or birth certificate just to register, • Eliminate online, mail-in, and drive-based voter registration options, • Force all voters to register or re-register in person, creating unnecessary barriers. This legislation is not based on a demonstrated need. Iowa’s own Secretary of State found only 35 noncitizens voted in the last election—out of more than 1.2 million ballots. That’s a margin of 0.003%. Our voter registration system is not broken. The SAVE Act would only suppress participation and silence Iowans who already face the greatest obstacles to voting. I am sure you will agree that voting is the duty of all Iowans and all citizens. We should be encouraging people to vote—and to vote as thoughtfully as possible. Instead of following a policy of diminishing returns that wastes resources on a virtually non-existent problem, we should be doing everything we can to support and encourage full participation in our democracy. Voting should be accessible to all eligible citizens. I urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and any related proposals that impose unnecessary documentation requirements or restrict existing registration methods. Please stand up for democracy and the voices of all Iowans.
