Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to act on four areas of the climate emergency that threaten the health, as well was safety of all in the United States. These recommendations on how policymakers can act to slow climate change and protect health were published in a recent brief by The Lancet. In the brief the recommendations by health professional all center on a rapid transition from fossil fuels: This will safeguard the health of all our citizens by avoiding the worst impact of fossil fuel pollution. 1. Reduce air pollution through tougher emissions standards and ending reliance on carbon-intensive fuels. 2. End fossil fuel exploration and extraction. 3. Ensure that protecting and enhancing human health is a central consideration as we have a societal-wide transition to renewable non-combustion energy. And finally 4. Invest in adaptation, especially those most vulnerable to protect people’s health from harm from those climate emergency side effects already being gelt.
