Legislation Needed: Holding Companies Accountable for Data Breaches

The persistent security flaw in Experian's system, allowing identity thieves to hijack accounts, is a matter of grave concern. Despite being documented in 2022, the issue remains unresolved, compromising the personal data of countless individuals. This, coupled with the recent SSN data leak in Maine, underscores the urgent need for robust data protection measures. It is crucial that companies like Experian be held accountable for their security lapses. Therefore, it is requested that legislation be enacted to impose substantial fines per leaked account and criminal liability for such breaches. This will not only ensure the protection of personal data but also compel companies to prioritize security over profits.
