Urgent: Defending Democracy & Stopping Authoritarian Overreach

I am writing as a concerned citizen watching the slow dismantling of our democracy. The erosion of fundamental democratic norms is happening in real time, and you are in a position to stop it. Instead, you seem to be enabling the forces tearing this country apart. Donald Trump’s open disregard for democratic institutions and his appointment of Elon Musk—an erratic, self-serving billionaire—should be setting off alarms for anyone who cares about our nation’s stability. Instead, it seems to be met with silence—or worse, approval—from those who should know better. Trump praises dictators, threatens allies, and encourages violence. His administration targets the press, blocking reporters who refuse to echo his narratives. Meanwhile, Musk is gutting federal agencies, disrupting national security, and imposing chaotic policies that serve only himself. How can you stand by as they consolidate power and mock the institutions meant to check them? This is not an abstract issue for me. My friend Janie’s transgender child and Megan’s trans sibling live in fear as their rights are stripped away. My friend Rich, who has spent 16 years at FEMA, worries daily—not just for his career but for his family and the dedicated civil servants he works with. The administration’s actions threaten vital agencies like FEMA, which provide critical crisis support. These are real people—my people—who are suffering because of policies you either support or refuse to fight against. I no longer trust the government to protect its citizens. I’ve invested in solar power out of fear for our power grid, grown and preserved my own food in anticipation of supply chain failures, and stocked emergency supplies, knowing another crisis will be mismanaged by leaders who prioritize self-preservation over governance. This is not how I want to live, but I refuse to be unprepared. You have immense power. You can push back against Trump and Musk’s authoritarian tactics. You can uphold the democratic ideals you claim to represent instead of bending to a man who has no intention of playing by the rules. If you stand by and do nothing, history will remember you not as a leader but as someone who allowed democracy to slip through their fingers. So I ask: What will you do? Will you fight for this country and its people, or will you enable those tearing it apart for their own gain?
