Support and pass the resolution to protect voting rights

The right to vote and the right to fair representation are under direct attack. The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais has cleared the way for politicians to dismantle districts where Black voters and other communities of color can elect candidates who represent them. Legislatures across the South are already pursuing new maps designed to dilute the power of voters of color and manipulate control of Congress. These attacks continue a decades-long campaign against the Voting Rights Act. The Supreme Court weakened the law’s federal oversight protections in Shelby County v. Holder. Its right-wing majority has now placed additional protections against racial vote dilution in jeopardy, threatening decades of progress toward a democracy where every community receives fair representation. Leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus have introduced a resolution calling on Congress to meet this crisis with action. The resolution calls for legislation to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act, end racial discrimination in voting and representation, and guarantee every eligible voter’s ability to participate. It also calls for eliminating the Senate’s 60-vote threshold during the next pro-democracy governing moment so a minority of senators can no longer bury voting rights legislation. I urge you to support and pass the House resolution calling for urgent action to guarantee civil rights, protect voting rights, and secure fair political representation for every American. The Supreme Court’s decision in “Louisiana v. Callais” threatens decades of progress toward equal representation. Politicians are already using the decision to pursue congressional maps that dilute the power of Black voters and other communities of color. These schemes undermine representative government and allow elected officials to choose their voters. Congress has the constitutional authority and moral responsibility to respond. Please support the resolution’s call to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act, end racial discrimination in voting and representation, and guarantee that every eligible voter can participate freely and fairly. I also support the resolution’s demand to eliminate the Senate’s 60-vote threshold during the next pro-democracy governing moment and pursue structural Supreme Court reforms, including an enforceable ethics code, term limits, and consideration of expanding the Court. Congress must ensure that federal voting protections can take effect and survive attacks from an unaccountable Court.
