Traffic stops should help keep communities safe by addressing dangerous driving that could injure or kill people – like speeding, reckless driving, and drunk driving. But across the country, overbroad traffic codes include many violations that have little to do with public safety, like expired inspections, cracked or obstructed windshields, and broken taillights. When a driver is pulled over for one of these minor violations, that is known as a non-safety traffic stop.
Non-safety traffic stops damage the relationship between the public and police, disproportionately harm communities of color, and force police officers to use limited time and resources on infractions that are statistically insignificant to public safety.
When we live in a country whose LEO motto is to protect and serve, should we not demand they adhere to it?
Demand protection and service. End LEO overreach!
