An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Stop the Vindictive Prosecution of James Comey

71 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!

The Justice Department's second indictment of James Comey over a social media post about seashells is a waste of taxpayer money and a direct assault on the First Amendment. This prosecution must be stopped. Comey posted a photo of seashells arranged to read "86 47" and deleted it within hours, clarifying that he opposes violence of any kind and didn't realize the phrase could be interpreted as threatening. The term "86" is common slang meaning "to throw out" or "to refuse service," not a credible threat. Prosecuting someone for ambiguous beach art they immediately took down sets a dangerous precedent for free speech. This is Comey's second indictment in months. The first was dismissed after a judge ruled the prosecutor was illegally appointed. Pursuing another case immediately after that dismissal exposes the government to claims of vindictive prosecution. The Justice Department is using federal resources to settle a personal grudge between the president and a former FBI director he fired. I expect you to publicly oppose this prosecution and demand that the Justice Department drop these charges. Our tax dollars should not fund unconstitutional attacks on political enemies.
