Congress: Pressure Administration to Keep US In Paris Agreement
93 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!
I’m writing today to urge you to pressure Trump and the White House cabal to reverse course on leaving the Paris Agreement. Since it takes a year to actually be ‘out’, there’s time in this year’s session of Congress to legislate and codify our involvement in curbing fossil fuel emissions whose side effects are playing out now, and will only get worse with inattention.
As you well know the Trump Administration’s foolish, incompetent, and unscientific decisions threaten our health every day. The United States' eventual withdrawal from the Paris Agreement is a major setback in global efforts to address climate change. The Paris Agreement represents an important international consensus to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
By withdrawing, the US risks further damaging its credibility and leadership on this critical issue while ceding ground to other countries taking stronger action.
We’ve all seen the headlines near and far: Climate change is already having severe consequences worldwide, from rising sea levels and extreme weather events to, perhaps most importantly, impacts on food and water security.
Decisive action is also needed to transition to clean energy sources and build resilience.
The US withdrawal undermines years of hard-fought negotiations and bogs down critical progress. I urge you to reconsider this decision and rejoin the Paris Agreement.
The costs of inaction on climate change far outweigh any perceived economic impacts of staying in the agreement.
The United States should be leading the charge, not retreating from its commitments. I implore you to put the long-term wellbeing of both Americans and global citizens first by reversing course and embracing responsible climate policies in line with the Paris Agreement. It’s not too late. Act now, legislate action, pressure the White House. Now. Thank you.
