Opposition to HB 2468 (School Voucher Expansion)

I am writing in strong opposition to HB 2468. Public education is a cornerstone of our communities in Kansas. Our public schools serve all children — regardless of income, disability status, religious background, or zip code. HB 2468 would divert critical public funds away from these schools and redirect them to private institutions that are not held to the same standards of accountability, transparency, or accessibility. Vouchers do not create better education systems — they create parallel systems. When public funds are siphoned from neighborhood schools, class sizes grow, resources shrink, and the students who remain — often those with the greatest needs — are left with fewer opportunities. This bill raises several serious concerns: • Loss of accountability: Private schools receiving public funds are not required to meet the same oversight, testing, or transparency standards as public schools. • Increased inequality: Voucher programs historically benefit families who already have the resources to access private education, leaving rural and low-income communities behind. • Impact on rural Kansas: Many rural areas do not have private school options. This bill would take funding from public schools without providing meaningful alternatives. • Public money for private decisions: Taxpayer funds should support public institutions that serve everyone — not subsidize selective education systems. Strong public schools strengthen local economies, civic engagement, and opportunity for future generations. Rather than diverting funding, we should invest in teachers, classrooms, and student support services that benefit all Kansas children. I urge you to reject HB 2468 and protect Kansas public education.
