An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
Dems, COUNT attendance; REPLACE SPEAKER JOHNSON FOR A DAY when absences allow it
12 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!
The GOP house majority is now paper thin.
Someday soon just a few Republicans will be absent and there will be an opportunity to replace "Speaker" Mike Johnson.
Please urge the Democratic leadership to keep a close watch on attendance and to be always poised to act to replace the speaker; be prepared to bring a raft of measures to the floor when thst day comes. Even if the transient Democratic majority lasts for only a day, YOU MUST BE PREPARED.
Let me stress that Mike Johnson is egregiously unfit to remain as speaker. When questioned about pressing matters, he has usually not had time to read or think. He has drawn his salary for months on end while keeping the house out of session. In so doing, he has deprived us of representation and broken the constitutional function of Congress.
It is particularly disturbing to recall Johnson's shocking activity on January 6th 2021. His shameful and illegal attempt to suppress the memorial plaque is a disgrace to the brave officers of the Capitol police who saved your lives.
Let me remind you:
When asked about the long delay in mounting the plaque, Johnson's office has offered the vague excuse that hanging it is "not implementable." Johnson has also failed to personally recognize today's fifth anniversary of the January 6th insurrection or organize any bipartisan memorial for the House.
These actions should surprise no one. Johnson was a central figure in efforts to overturn the 2020 election. He organized an amicus brief signed by over 100 House Republicans supporting a lawsuit to throw out election results in four swing states. And on the night of January 6th itself -- after the riot was quelled and the blood was mopped from the Capitol floors -- Johnson voted to object to certifying the election.
Our democracy is at stake. So is global security. Also, the rule of law, international law, and our constitution are in peril.
Johnson's truancy, fecklessness, and lack of allegiance to the constitution are unacceptable.
I call on my elected representative to acknowledge the peril of this moment and act accordingly. NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL.
REMOVE THE SPEAKER WHEN YOU CAN AND DO YOUR JOB, even if the transient Democratic majority lasts only a day.
