An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
Stop Federal Book Ban Bill (H.R. 7661)

As someone who feels strongly that the best education is one that sparks curiosity and the desire to learn, I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 7661, a bill that could rightfully be called "The National Book Banning Act."
H.R. 7661 would give Congress the authority to overrule the people who are in the best position to know what books and other learning materials students should have access to: educators in partnership with parents and families, and local school boards.
In addition, the bill’s wording is broad enough to impact how subjects such as science, health, and art are taught and discussed. The legislation even uses the threat of withholding funding as a means of carrying out its goals.
Book banning has no place in our democracy. Please ensure that schools are places where every student can access books that reflect and respect a wide variety of experiences, perspectives, families, and communities. Vote NO on H.R. 7661.
Thank you.
