This plan violates international law and sets a dangerous precedent for space militarization. The Outer Space Treaty, which the United States ratified in 1967, prohibits placing nuclear weapons in orbit and limits military activities on celestial bodies. While the administration frames this as civilian infrastructure, the Pentagon's direct involvement under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reveals the military dimension of this program. Competing agencies designing nuclear systems for space deployment blurs the line between peaceful exploration and weapons development. This initiative risks triggering an arms race in space and undermining decades of international cooperation. Other nations will view American nuclear reactors on the moon as a strategic military advantage, not just power infrastructure. The consequences of normalizing nuclear technology in space extend far beyond this administration's timeline.
