I'm writing to object that the House just advanced a plan that would add $70 billion to ICE and Border Patrol with absolutely no strings attached.
This is unjustified, as ICE and Border Patrol operations across the country are out of control. They violently and unlawfully target, arrest, & harm children, families, and our communities. And we have seen no accountability for the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti or the many others who have been harmed.
Meanwhile, the current reconciliation proposal would give up to an additional $140 billion to these agencies with no strings attached. It’s unacceptable.
Please refuse any new money to these agencies without serious reforms.
For months, they have attacked and shot U.S. citizens, dragged children from their beds in the middle of the night, zip-tied teenagers at school, smashed car windows, and even driven away from an arrest scene with a toddler still in the backseat.
Enough is enough.
For the safety of every person that you represent, you must act now to stop this abuse. Please block any funding for ICE or Border Patrol unless it includes safeguards against racial profiling, warrantless arrests, and the detention of children; creates actual accountability for agents, including real limits on use of force and on surveillance of protesters; and mandates that agents identify themselves, take off their masks, wear and use body cameras, and ensure that footage is available for investigations and accountability.
Without all of these reforms, ICE & CBP shouldn't get another penny.
