I'm asking you to launch an investigation into the humanitarian consequences of US sanctions and the oil blockade against Cuba. Trump's threat of tariffs against countries delivering fuel to Cuba has cut off oil imports for three months, collapsing the electricity grid and crippling daily life for 11 million people.
The damage is measurable and severe. Cuba's infant mortality rate has doubled since 2018. At the Ramón González Coro maternity hospital in Havana, women are giving birth at home because medical staff cannot afford transportation to work. Hospitals lack basic drugs like tranexamic acid. Premature births are rising and illnesses are being detected too late because the healthcare system that once rivaled wealthy nations is now failing.
This isn't about democracy. Trump himself said he could "have the honour of taking Cuba" and could "do anything I want with it." Meanwhile, families cook on charcoal stoves during blackouts, rubbish piles up in streets, and water systems fail. A taxi driver told a reporter: "We're living in the 21st century, but it feels like the 19th."
Congress needs to examine whether these sanctions constitute collective punishment of civilians. The evidence of harm is overwhelming and demands accountability.
