I am writing to express my strong support for S. 2337, known as the Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act. This crucial piece of legislation aims to address the growing concern of plastic pollution, particularly focusing on pre-production plastic pellets, which are a significant contributor to this environmental challenge.
Plastic pollution is not only a local issue but a global crisis that threatens our wildlife, ecosystems, and even human health. As a citizen deeply concerned about our environment, I believe it is imperative to take decisive action to mitigate this problem. The United States alone generates approximately 32 million tons of plastic waste annually, with a mere eight percent being recycled. Much of this waste, unfortunately, finds its way into our oceans, causing irreparable harm.
The Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act proposes a solution by mandating the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to enforce regulations prohibiting the discharge of plastic pellets and other pre-production plastics into waterways. This measure is crucial for facilities and companies engaged in the manufacturing, usage, packaging, or transportation of these materials.
I strongly advocate for the development and adoption of plant-based alternatives to traditional plastics. These innovations could significantly reduce reliance on conventional plastic pellets, known as nurdles, which are currently a standard in producing most plastic goods.
Supporting this bill aligns with the need for sustainable practices and a commitment to protecting our environment for future generations. I urge you to stand with your constituents in supporting the Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act and advancing our nation towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
